One Year

Steve has been gone for one year today.

*deep breath*

One year without my Steve. One year of fostering special needs cats without my social bridge.

In the past year, I’ve found a niche at the shelter where I’ve been volunteering for almost 10 years. I’ve honed in my work with special needs cats. I now work exclusively with the “bad nuggets.” That is, I work with the cats who have severe behavior issues. The cats who have been on multiple bite holds. The cats who would be euthanized in most other shelters. I’m doing the same work Jackson Galaxy did in his shelter in Boulder Colorado many years ago. In fact, I met Jackson Galaxy the day after Thanksgiving, and he encouraged me to make house calls. Basically, to do what he does!

I still love, and would still very much work with, the cats with health issues. But it seems more people are capable of handling health issues, and very few people handle the bad nuggets like I do.

I don’t remember the last time I updated, but we adopted a Calico earlier this year. She was a bad nugget. She was in a staff member’s office with a sign on the door that said “enter at your own risk!” I instantly fell in love with her. My husband met her and fell in love, too. She’s fluffy and sweet and has Steve’s eyes. And the best part is that she sits on the side of the tub while we shower!

We also adopted a pit bull (finally)! Raise your hand if you’re shocked she has health issues!

Anyways, here’s Steve (as I fondly remember her) and Wasp

  1. I can’t believe it’s been a year. First Angelversaries are always the hardest, not that any of them are easy.
On a brighter note the cat whisperer work you have been doing is truly amazing! And i have no doubt it is saving plenty of precious lives.
Sending you tons of hugs and chin scratches to your beautiful feline friends that surround you.

    Jackie and Huckster ❤️

  2. Awww it’s so unreal that a year has passed. We think of Steve so often around here, it’s like she never left the building. And in so many ways she has not. Steve’s spirit and story will always be a part of our community, and the powerful bond that you had with her is legendary.

Kudos to you for continuing to do great work with the kitties, THANK YOU. A long time ago I had a cat who was a bad nugget, and I surrendered her to a shelter because I was incompetent when it came to helping her. I’d like to think she ran into someone as patient, kind and understanding as you. Wasp and all the little nuggets out there are blessed beyond belief when you step into their world. Thank you thank you.

  3. Ateve’s banner shows up often on the site and I ALWAYS smile when I see it. It always reminds me of your devotion to her, and Steve to you. Goodness knows you had some challenges during her journey here, but the two of you stayed the course and overcame them all!

I know the Angelversaries are rough, but I also know that the happy memories will become more prevalent with each versary❤

For you to continue to help other furbavies in need is a beautiful way to carry on Steve’s legacy. BTW…..Love the pictures of Steve and the “bad nugget” Wasp!! Smile makers!! And I love that you adopted a Pittie who needs love and care. You truly are a Saint to these animals❤

I’m so glad you checked in with us. It’s such an honor to have been…and continue to be…on this journey with Steve and all the furbavies jhe sends your way.

    Much love to all❤
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!
